MY GENERATION

Melbourne to Monterey - 1966 to 1968 - for GoSet Magazine

An exhibition of photographic works by Colin Beard
8 November to 7 December, 2014
This exhibition is based upon a narrow period of time in the life of a photographer and a time that was exciting and perhaps tumultuous for those who lived through the same period - 1966-1968.

Colin Beard has been a photographer for nearly 50 years. His work extends from photojournalism to commercial photography to scenic and art photography.

My Generation depicts Colin’s role as a photojournalist for GoSet Magazine, an Australian music magazine which was popular during the latter half of the 1960s. An observer and documenter of the ascent of popular music and rock music in the 1960s, Colin’s work is an archive of moments and musicians of this time - from his travels in Australia and overseas to the music ‘laboratories’, performance spaces and ‘happenings’ in the UK and the USA.

The exhibition provides just a snapshot of those heady days of Australia’s emerging musical talents, plus that of some more established ones. There are the luminaries from overseas, too - those who captured an audience and imaginations here in this country and the world.

Of course, the 1960s and the years from 1966 to 1968, in particular, were significant for a number of reasons, not least due the rise of social movements, political unrest and the ‘finding of a political voice’ in dissent of the status quo at the time. Expression in the Arts was both a product and a provocateur of these times, with perhaps contemporary music demonstrating best the threads of change that were emerging then.

This exhibition will no doubt be a nostalgia trip for many. It also allows some retrospective thinking about the people who comprise the subjects of Colin’s photographs - what we have come to know of them since then and perhaps what we have also lost in ensuing generations of musicians and others involved in the Arts. There is also the primary engagement of viewer and image - as with all art - the subject, the composition and its expression.

Prints from the exhibition are available for purchase as limited editions (of 25) at $ 490 for a 45 x 30cm print (approx) or $ 690 for a 60 x 40cm print (approx). Print sizes may vary a little - some a little smaller or a little larger than these measurements, depending on the image. This will be confirmed at the time of purchase for a particular image.

Many thanks to the illustrious Sue Adler (artist / photographer) for spending so much time in assisting us in getting our heads around Colin’s huge catalogue of work and the curatorial framework for its presentation, and to Fiona McConnachie for her hands-on help and company in mounting this huge show!.
